FAQs

For general information regarding your student’s global experience, please refer to the FAQ’s outlined below.

GEO encourages parents and guardians to work with their student directly for further communication, but to contact [email protected] with any additional questions or concerns.

It is important to discuss with your student how often you expect to be in contact while they are abroad. Make sure your student has a plan or an easy way to contact you while abroad.

Many destinations abroad may lack amenities to provide consistent internet access and cellular phone coverage. Students may need to identify alternate means of communication, such as landlines and internet cafes.

Make sure your student knows every possible way to contact you including: home phone, work phone, cell phone, email address, etc.

Adjusting to a new culture and re-entering their own is not always a seamless process. As parents, it is important that you are aware of the transition challenges your student may face. This might include a wide range of experiences and emotions that they must adapt to over a period of time—often longer than just a few days. Though demanding, these potential cultural challenges will make your student’s time abroad that much more memorable and rewarding.

The Global Experience Office is required to adhere to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We recommend that you have your student contact the Northeastern Registrar’s Office on your behalf so that we may release information to you about your student if needed (particularly in an emergency situation).  Every student is required to indicate an emergency contact with our office. Encourage your student to make you that emergency contact.

The costs of study abroad programs are listed on the individual program pages or on the Finances section of the GEO website.

All financial aid can be applied to semester and summer study abroad programs.

There are also several scholarship, grant, and fellowship opportunities that your student may apply for. A Global Experience Advisor can assist with scholarship applications.

Study Abroad and Global Co-op: Students are responsible for securing their own housing on a traditional study abroad or global co-op program unless otherwise specified on their program. Off Campus Housing and Support Services (OCHSS) is here to support your student in finding housing and any housing issues during their global experience.

Dialogue of Civilizations:  Housing is provided and included in the cost of the program. For more information about program housing abroad, please refer to each specific program page.
