Do Your Research
Granada is a very safe city, for both locals and tourists. I have not personally felt unsafe or threatened in any way since coming here. Of course, like any touristic city, there is a decent amount of pick-pocketing that occurs in highly popular and/or touristic areas, and especially an obviously non-Spanish student should be watching their personal belongings when out and about.
In general terms of safety and travel, Granada has very affordable taxis that I would recommend everyone who is not walking home in a group to use as a safe way to get back from a bar or club. Also, on a lighter note..Granada, as a touristic city, has many people who make a living by overcharging foreigners for rosemary or palm readings. I did not know to watch out for these women, who usually walk around the Cathedral where I live, and was hustled into spending 10 euros on a bad palm reading and a piece of rosemary. I now know to avoid these women and to not engage, because it ends up being really difficult to say no after they start blessing you etc.
You should avoid carrying around too much cash, and since many places in Granada will not take American bank cards, I would recommend doing your research before hand and asking your bank about a European chip card, or see if it’s possible to open a European account while abroad to avoid ATM fees or transfer fees.
