Language
I have had a few situations where not knowing the language has put me in a sticky spot. While I am taking an Italian course, it did not start until the week of classes started. That being said, I arrived at the Florence train station, and attempted to find my check-in spot even though I had no internet on my phone. I ended up getting lost and a random Italian man who did not speak English tried to help me. While we both did not speak each others languages, we were still hopeful that he could help me get to where I was going. While we sent me on the right track, it was still difficult because I wasn’t sure where to go since he did not speak any english. Another odd situation I’ve been in was when I was fully moved into my apartment and I had to go grocery shopping. I didn’t think much of it but all the products were in italian and I couldn’t understand most of them, which was frustrating since I was just trying to find simple, everyday items. While I have learned Italian, It’s mostly just beginning phases and vocabulary. I actually really like the phrase, “La Dolce Vita” because it is relevant to my opinion of living in Florence for summer 2, it is quite literally “The Sweet life”. As my Italian knowledge progresses, I hope to acquire new favorite phrases.
