Paris: Favorite Landmarks
The purpose of this blog post was supposed to be telling you, my dear reader of my one favorite museum or landmark in Paris. Well, I am afraid I won’t be able to meet the task as it is impossible to fall in love with only one landmark in Paris. Instead, however, I will try to give you a somewhat comprehensive list of places that I keep coming back to and enjoy and of my favorite walking paths.
Seine. Nothing. Nothing can be better than walking along the river. As I live a 20 minute walk away from the Tour that’s where I prefer to start my walks. Down by the river all the way to the Louvre. You will pass several little pieces of…Russia on your way: the domes of the newly opened Russian cultural center and the Alexander III bridge donated to France by the Russian Emperor Nicholas II. A little later, passing the Musée d’Orsay, with one of the most impressive collections of the works of impressionists it is also free for permanent residents of the EU under the age of 26, therefore, I have a wonderful opportunity to explore this massive museum piece by piece.
Nice weather but a lazy mood, or maybe I have a long book to read for one of my classes? Then I prefer to go the Luxembourg Gardens, which also is the place where I spend breaks between my classes together with my friends and a Sciences Po cafeteria sandwich.
Raining? Weather you have lots of homework or lots of free time, Centre Pompidou is the place to be. I absolutely love working in its library, or discovering and rediscovering again its exhibitions (exhibitions of permanent collections are free for students).
Rain or shine, shopping or walk and chill, Le Marais is the neighborhood to be. Still can’t get enough of this place and certainly not even close to marking it down as the neighborhood that I know, but it is certainly one that I fell in love with.
Want to get a feel for the authentic Paris? Rue Mouffetard is the place. A little tip: yes, there is so much delicious looking food on this one street…but prices are higher than average, therefore, not recommended for poor students 😉 And if you are in the area, certainly stop by the Grande Mosquée de Paris to me it’s a little place of my other favorite city, Marrakech, in Paris and…the most delicious couscous and tea in the restaurant attached to the Mosque.
