The Beauty of Skåne

From museums to unique landmarks there are a lot of great places to visit in Lund and the surrounding region of Skåne, and in this blog post I want to highlight some of the top attractions that I have been to.

On the topic of museums, you should not miss Lund Kulturen, which is an open air museum that exhibits both the old city life and agricultural life in Sweden from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. The preserved area in the middle of the old town demonstrates how life used to be throughout the region and Scandinavia not too long ago. If you venture a bit further from Lund and take a day trip to Copenhagen, you have access to a number of great museums such as the Museum of Design or the National Museum of Denmark. The capital of Denmark is rich in both history, art, and design and there plenty of venues that will keep you busy for days at a time.

In the region of Skåne, the shoreline offers plenty of fantastic escapes from the hustle and bustle of school life, with some very unique sights as well. If you travel north up the coast, just past the city of Helsingborg is Kullaberg Reserve which is known for having great sea cliffs and hiking trails along them, as well as rock climbing. Not as far to the north, one can take a ferry from the town of Landskrona to Ven island, which is a beautiful island for enjoying a day at the beach or biking around. To the southeast of Lund is the coastal town of Kåseberga, which has the famous Ales Sterna, a formation of 59 boulders in the shape of a ship that were erected 1400 years ago. The coastal towns in Skåne certainly have lots of history to offer as well as picturesque views and warm beaches in the summer.

Another topic that runs a long list of attractions to see are the old churches and castles that dot the countryside of Sweden. I have mentioned Lund Cathedral in previous posts, but getting an inside tour of the first Catholic church to be built in Sweden (1107 AD) is definitely worthwhile. The many wars between Denmark and Sweden have also provided many castles and citadels that can be visited such as Sofiero Castle in Helsingborg, which provides a great view of the city and harbor.

There are a number of outdoor parks and reserves to visit in Skåne as well, and some of these are close enough to Lund for a day trip. The neighboring town of Dalby has a great park and also an old reservoir which now provides a place for picnics, swimming, and even cliff jumping. A bit farther away is Söderåsen National Park which provides an amazing wilderness to explore.
