Top 10 Things To Do Around Hobart
Since the hostel is in New Town, a suburb of Hobart, we tend to go downtown frequently. It can be hard knowing what to do when you’re in a new city, so I decided to compile a list of 10 of my favorite things to do in Hobart. I really recommend you check them out if you’re ever in this neck of the woods!
Running every Saturday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, there are about 300 stalls selling everything from food, to ceramics, to trinkets and clothes. It’s a great place to look for freshly made products such as peanut butter, jams, nuts, and more. You’ll find great souvenirs to bring back home, as well as any type of cuisine you could think of! So far, I’ve tried dumplings, sausage, bagels, churros, oysters, and plan to have a lot more this upcoming Saturday.
A small boutique located in downtown Hobart, offers unlimited classes for two weeks for 20 AUSD. If you’ve ever seen yoga class prices in the States, you’d know that this deal is a steal! They run various classes every day including hot yoga, flow yoga, and deep and slow yoga.
The library is located in downtown Hobart as well. It’s a great place to study and get a good amount of work done when an exam is coming up. It’s also really nice to get out of the hostel, and they have many resources as well as free wifi!
Villino Coffee and Bury Me Standing Bagels
Although there are countless coffee and food shops downtown, two stuck out to me particularly. I’m usually not huge on coffee unless it’s a DD iced coffee; however, the ones at Villino are to die for. I’ve ordered the mocha and latte numerous times and have not been disappointed. Bury Me Standing has some of the best bagels I’ve ever tasted. Having various types of bagels including everything, paprika and cheddar, sesame, plain and more, you can pair it with one of their four cream cheeses, or even turn it into a sandwich!
O-Bar and Others
Salamanca Place has a line of bars and different restaurants lined up one after another. One of the favorites of our dialogue is the O-Bar which sits right next to the water. It’s a lively place filled with a lot of dancing and youth. The music is always exactly what we want to hear, and the drinks don’t disappoint either. The bars around Salamanca are also great if you want to get a snack or a drink including breweries and wine bars.
Walking Path and Botanical Gardens
Looking for a relaxed afternoon and the weather is beautiful? Try walking down the bike path that is right behind the hostel that leads to both Hobart and Moonah (other neighboring town). On the way, you might run into the beautiful botanical gardens! There are smaller paths that run along the water for some breathtaking scenery.
I’ve been to a lot of different restaurants in Tasmania now, but this one was my favorite. It’s an Italian restaurants located in Battery Point, a 10-minute walk from Salamanca Place. This restaurant had all the pasta dishes you could dream of, and all of them were customizable! You could pick your pasta, and sauce, and add-ons. They had pizza, wine, and dessert too. I ordered the gnocchi in a garlic butter sauce with prawns, scallops, and calimari. It was delicious.
About a 20-minute car ride from the hostel, this is a must-do if you’re going to hike a lot in Tasmania. Having a difficult hiking path to an easy road that leads all the way to the summit, the choices are endless. The top overlooks Hobart and the water, making it a perfect spot for a sunset too.
Want to get out of the hostel but don’t want to go all the way downtown? Moonah is a 15-minute walk on the bike path in the other direction. It’s another small suburb filled with cute coffee shops, small businesses, and restaurants. It’s a great study location as well. One of my favorite coffee shops was Shake A Leg Jr., which made some of the best croissants I have ever had.
If you’re into exercise and trying out new things, check out the rock climbing gym downtown! A group of us would go there frequently, and it didn’t disappoint. You can purchase day passes of 10-visit passes as well.
