Transportation in London

If there’s one thing that’s great about living on campus again, it’s that the commute is so easy! I feel super fortunate to be able to just walk a few minutes and get to class easily. It seems like there are plenty of other students around though that travel in for school. That just comes naturally though with going to school in a major metropolitan area. The city is so spread out and can be expensive to live in, so sometimes it just makes more sense for students to commute in, rather than pay for rent in an expensive city.

Old Street tube station

Aside from also maybe being a little expensive, the public transportation system here in London is excellent; well worth the cost we pay to probably keep it up and running smooth in my opinion. The city is well connected with bus and train stations everywhere, and the trains travel pretty quickly so the commutes around town never feel too long. The nicest part though is that it seems trains and busses come like every couple of minutes, which is so nice. I definitely do not miss having to wait 11 minutes for the next orange line train at Ruggles every time I miss a train. I guess the trains have to run so often though to support the giant population of the city. If you get caught in the rush hour traffic, you’re definitely going to get real up close and personal with every other commuter jammed into the train like a can of sardines.

Kings Cross Station

The world famous network of black cabs in London are pretty impressive too. They’re always readily available wherever you go and the drivers all seem to know the roads like the back of their hands, without a GPS I might add, and also can give great recommendations on things to see and do. Uber is of course ubiquitous and like every major city now, London has no shortage of uber drivers to meet your transportation needs.
