Week 5: Travel and Safety Tips

Be willing to say no. While Cuba is incredibly safe, and I would say with a fair degree of confidence that no one should seriously worry about being a victim of crime here so long as they use common sense, there is definitely a lot of street hustling. People will come up to you and ask you to take a picture, and then demand money, or tour you around and try to get a free drink. While there is nothing wrong with helping out someone else, if you would prefer not to it’s really important to know that you can just say no.

The buses are the cheapest way to travel. While in the US it’s a few dollars for a bus, in Cuba it costs a few cents. It’s amazing! That being said, the buses are definitely very crowded, and you need to be very careful to make sure you get off at the right stop, but if you are on a tight budget you can’t really beat the bus!
