Feeling Welcomed and Guided
In my opinion, Singapore Management University has done a great job welcoming and guiding their exchange students. This excellent experience so far can be credited to OGL or their Office of Global Learning. Their staff is helpful and kind and there are multiple instances when I felt like they helped me or my fellow exchange students. For example, when I was applying to study abroad, I remember checking the official SMU Exchange 2016 Facebook page and seeing their prompt responses to all the incoming exchange students’ inquiries. OGL would also post reminders on the page for upcoming events and deadlines.
Now that I have been studying at SMU for nearly 2 months, I finally feel settled in to all my classes. The most interesting course is titled “Exploring Asian Identities” and we have discussed topics such as orientalism, globalization and popular culture, modernity, nationality and the list goes on. It truly is a thought provoking class and one that I enjoy very much because I think about my own identity as an Asian American quite a bit. As a business student, I use the left side of my brain most of the time, but in this class, I get to exercise the right side and to tap into emotions, opinions, and so on. I also strongly believe that the professor plays a major role in making a class interesting. This professor is well spoken and enthusiastic about the course. He is also a gold mine of knowledge. I think any professor that requires us to write and to write well is an A+ in my book.
