Who Needs the Metro?

Getting to and from class is relatively easy. At first being in a new city I felt lost and solely relied on the metro system. Once you learn Lisbon’s neighborhoods you quickly begin to realize just how small Lisbon really is. For example, yesterday I went to an outdoor movie at NOVA’s business school campus and thought it would be easier to take the metro to São Sebastião and walk 10-15 minutes to the campus. With waiting for the metro to Arrive at Marquēs d. Pombal and walking to the school it took me about 30 minutes to arrive to my final destination. Once I arrived to my destination I realized that I was right across the street from the park located behind Marquēs d. Pombal. After the movie I decided to walk home with another student who lives in my area. From school to my homestay the walk was about 15 minutes.

Metro

All in all, public transportation is great and easy to use when going long distances but it might be quicker to walk when going shorter distances. Walking also helps you learn the city inside and out. Everyone walks everywhere in Lisbon! Uber’s are new to Lisbon and aren’t very common to use; in total I’ve only been in 3 Uber’s in the time I’ve been here. Most of the time I use the metro or walk. The bus system is relatively easy to use once you learn it, and can be a great way to go places that are outside of the metro zone. Unfortunately, public transportation closes down relatively early. With a bustling night life here in Lisbon, the metro doesn’t accommodate people after 1:30am. But if you decide to be a true European and pull an “all nighter”, you can catch the metro home at 6:30am.
