Writing my own interesting story
As the spring semester flew by, I started thinking about my summer plans. Did I really want to spend another summer in my comfort zone? I thought about all the home cooked meals, the family gatherings, and relaxing on the beach. And of course, my baby brother dog, Duncan.
I thought about that summer job I have held on to since high school. Those things were all fine. But a part of me longed to try something new. Experiencing historic places, trying outlandish activities, meeting new people, all completely different from the life I have lived thus far. It is what I love about being an international affairs major. Now was my chance to try all the things I had been curious about, which I could only read about in books or ask others about.
I have always looked up to people who are more worldly than I. These were the people who dared to take a trip, and it seemed to me like the risk always paid off. These were the people with the most interesting stories to share. These were the people who knew unusual skills and languages and had friends from all over the world. I have never left the US before, and I plan to put myself out there at every opportunity.
I have been focused on work and school for some time now. I’ve fallen into a comfortable routine that I am…hesitant to change. But I know I have the same fears as anyone else when it comes to meeting new people, and my fellow NEU students and I are all in the same boat. In just two days, I will be in another country, and the family who is hosting me will be showing me around the produce market and the neighborhood I will live in. Follow me next week to discover the exotic seafood Lima is known for.
