BOSTON, Massachusetts, Monday, May 6, 2019 (Northeastern University Global Experience Office)——-Northeastern University’s Global Experience Office is pleased to announce the introduction of a new scholarship award – the President Aoun Scholarship. This opportunity will be available to students beginning with those participating in global experiences for the Fall 2019 semester.
In support of the University’s academic goals, six Aoun Scholars will be selected annually to receive $5,000 scholarships towards participation in a Global Experience. We hope that this provides an exciting opportunity for students who are deeply engaged with their campus communities to both inform and be informed by global experiences for their continued work.
Our goal in creating this scholarship is to allow campus community leaders the opportunity to develop and master transferable skills through a global experience, and to engage more deeply in our global community wherever they may be. Our local and global engagement comes from the same starting point—the belief that academic pursuits must be grounded in reality. These Aoun Scholars will serve as the bridge connecting local and global engagement.
Aoun Scholars have a demonstrated record of campus community engagement with a particular emphasis on equity, inclusion, and social justice. Successful applicants have demonstrated how their participation in global experiences will further inform their work.
In order to be considered, applicants must be nominated by one of the following campus Centers/Offices: Asian American Center, Center for Intercultural Engagement, Center for Spirituality, Dialogue & Service, John D. O’Bryant African American Institute, Latinx Center at Northeastern University, LGBTQA Resource Center, Social Justice Resource Center, or the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.
Students must submit an application to further articulate their engagement within the NU community, along with a nomination form. From there, a selection committee, comprised of members from offices across Northeastern, will assess the application materials against the questions posed to prospective scholars using an established rubric. Strong applicants will effectively align the goals for community impact, equity and social justice with the opportunities posed through the program. Preference will be given to students who have not previously participated in a global experience.
