REPORTING ON RELIGION IN BOSTON AND ABROAD

On these pages is the work of a team of 14 student reporters from Northeastern University’s School of Journalism. The project—Reporting on Religion—was conceived of by Northeastern Religion Studies Professor Liz Bucar and Journalism Professor Carlene Hempel as an opportunity to teach students how to understand and report on the complicated intersection of Islam, Christianity and Judaism. The project was supported with a grant by the Luce/ACLS Program in Religion, Journalism & International Affairs and included a week-long intensive reporting trip to Granada, Spain. Both the Boston- and Spain-based components offered students the opportunity to use their newly targeted literacy about religion for the in-the-field, in-depth and expansive reporting projects about religion and the people and places that reflect its many complexities.
