A Few Tips about Japan
One of the main things I remember from pre-departure meetings for this DOC was that Tokyo is a safe place. If someone drops their wallet on the street, it would be returned to them as soon as possible with all the cash still in it. After a couple weeks in Tokyo, I concur. I as well as other NEU students have not had a problem or encounter with crime in Japan. There is however, things to be wary of. Roppongi and Shinjuku are known to be a bit sketchy at night. There are many clubs throughout the city especially located in the aforementioned areas. Some clubs or bars will tempt customers with promises of “pretty girls” and “cheap drinks” when in reality, you might end up being charged $1000. So a good thing to do if you want to go out at night is to do some research on the places you want to go or ask the locals for advice! If something feels wrong and sketchy, it most likely is.
A little secret to traveling in Japan is that small random restaurants on the side of the road are actually delicious! One might assume that these small joints are subpar but in reality, they offer unique flavors that couldn’t be found in chain restaurants. I know in the U.S, especially New York City, small hole-in-the-wall restaurants MAY offer good food but usually at exorbitantly high prices. In Japan, these smaller restaurants are cheap yet undoubtedly scrumptious.
