Academico Cuatro
Every University needs some kind of meeting place where students can let loose, escape the stress of school and enjoy each other’s time outside of the classroom. For the students at EARTH University that meeting place is Academico Cuatro, formally known as Sagitarios. There are three different main buildings on campus each titled Academico Uno, Dos and Tres. Naturally, the local campus bar received the satirical name of Academico Cuatro.
Every Tuesday and Friday students take the local bus to the bar in order to relax and enjoy. This week a group of us decided to join our fellow peers and get a taste of the EARTH University’s version of Conor Larkins.
When we arrived to Academico Cuatro we were immediately greeted by local students who we had met earlier on campus. They asked us to join them at their table and welcomed us with open arms. After some quick introductions and casual small talk we were immediately encouraged to join them on the dance floor. Now, it must be taken into consideration that dancing in Central America is far different than dancing at Our House or Cask ‘n Flagons in Boston. Here, locals dance with skill and grace. No matter who you are everyone knows how to tango, salsa and more. In Costa Rica dancing is simply a social activity. Dancing serves as an opportunity for individuals to meet new people and build new relationships.
We stayed at the bar talking with students and learning about who they were for many hours. Dancing, singing and chatting through the night we got our fair share of Costa Rican college life.
Going to Sagitarios was a fantastic group outing. It was a great opportunity to meet locals and get to know them outside of the formal setting of school and classes. We were able to engage in real conversation, learn typical Central American dances and hear more about what life looks like for an average Costa Rican college student. I found that the best way to meet EARTH University students is to go out to the local hang out spots and immerse yourself in their typical evening get-togethers.
