One important secret
Although Rome is a generally safe city, it is not uncommon to hear stories of pick pocketing or travelers having baggage stolen when they were not paying attention. You don’t hear many stories of assault or of weapons used, but stories of petty theft are frequent. If you carry a purse or bag with you while travelling, it is best to keep this in front of you and not sling it across your back where you cannot see it. Be careful with putting bags overhead when you ride on trains, and make sure to carry your money in different places so that if part of it is taken you still have some remaining. In addition, keep a copy of your passport with you and do not carry around the actual document. Italian law does require you to have identification on you to prove you are legally in the country, but only a copy is necessary and JCU will provide you with this when you arrive by scanning your passport. Following this, carry the provided copy and leave your actual passport in a safe location.
One important secret is that it is best to purchase train tickets before you arrive at the station. There are several sites online that you allow you to do this and to print out your tickets. Purchasing tickets at the kiosk at the train station is a prevalent area where people are subject to pick pocketing. The kiosk machines even give you a warning when you first begin to use them, alerting you to be aware of pickpockets in the area.
