Breezing Through the City
Getting around Edinburgh is a breeze. There’s an elaborate bus system that is very easy to use. If you’ve used the public transportation system in Boston, you’ll have no problem figuring out the one in Edinburgh. It’s one pound and 60 pence for every ride (which is around $2), and you need to make sure you use exact change. If you pay using a two pound coin, you will not get your change back. I may have made that mistake the first time I rode the bus. Additionally, if you think you’ll be using the bus on a regular basis, you can purchase weekly and monthly passes. I prefer to walk to most places, so I have not purchased a bus pass, but I do know people that have and they love it.
There’s also a free campus shuttle that buses students between Central campus and King’s campus. Unfortunately, the King’s campus houses all of the engineering and science classes and is around 2 miles away from Central campus. I take this shuttle quite often to get to and from classes. The shuttle is almost always on time, and it has been a lifesaver on many occasions.
Uber is also very prevalent throughout the city, and there are a ton of taxi companies as well. I’ve never felt stranded in Edinburgh because there are so many options to get around. There’s also Waverley Station which has buses and trains that will take you outside of Edinburgh. I took the train from Waverley Station into Glasgow last weekend, and it was a breeze.
