Cambridge: Transportation

The Cambridge city center is quite small, and getting around by foot is relatively easy. My accommodation is about a 10-minute walk from where I take my meals and a 5-minute walk from where I have classes. I chose this accommodation because it’s close to classes, not taking into account that I would have to walk the 10 minutes to the cafeteria every day. For lunch and dinner, this is fine, but I have to be at breakfast at 8:00 am to make my 8:45 class (which is 5 days a week). I’m not that much of a morning person, so waking up to leave the house by 7:50 am every day is pretty difficult! In Boston, I live in Jamaica Plain, which means a 10-15 minute T ride to and from campus. Being able to walk everywhere here in Cambridge is really nice.

I haven’t yet tried public transportation (there’s no need to). I am planning some trips around the U.K. later on though, so I will be taking either a bus or train to London, Oxford, and/or Brighton. From what I can tell, trains and buses are pretty easy to use and not too expensive. We did, however, take a trip into London and the underground there is very easy to use and very well-run (much better than the T!). However, it’s pretty expensive. I spent about 15GBP (~$19) just to take the tube twice round trip within the city center.
