Chinese History
My favorite class this semester would have to be China’s Economic Reforms. In this class, we study how China transitioned from a communist, agrarian society into the hybrid, global power it is today. The professor who teaches the class is a very interesting, well-known economist who currently consults for the government and used to be the head of the biggest bank in China. He also lived in China during the Cultural Revolution so he always tells us insightful stories about life before. One of his stories was how he had to work in a village for 3 years because intellectuals were sent to the countryside before to be reformed. Afterwards, he was able to go back to school and eventually receive his Masters at Harvard. In this class I’ve learned so much about the amount of changes and reforms China had to go through in order to modernize. Furthermore, I’ve been able to learn in-depth about how China’s communist influence has both helped and hurt it develop.
My favorite places to study are at coffee shops. Going to new coffeeshops to study have been a great way to explore the city and get homework done at the same time. So far, my favorite coffee shops I’ve found are in the Jingan area which is also conveniently only 3 subway stops away from campus.
