The mealtimes in Berlin are similar to the mealtimes in the United States. The only times I feel as though the meal times vary are on the weekends. We have breakfast every morning in the hostel from 9:10 AM. Our group gets out of class for lunch around 1 or 2. Dinner time depends on what time you want to go, I usually eat dinner around 7 or 8 PM. The hours in which I eat dinner here are very similar to the food schedule that I’m on at home. I find myself eating dinner much later on the weekends. What I like about the food that is provided to us by the hostel is that they are very small healthy portions. A typical breakfast at the hostel will consist of yogurt, hardboiled eggs, cucumbers, tomatoes, tea, etc.

The portion size at restaurants are very similar to the portion sizes in the U.S. We moved hostels today and there are so many food options in our area. At our first hostel the only options in walking distance of us was schwarma and falafel. I eat breakfast at the hostel every morning. Luckily, the hostel provides breakfast for us. The types of meals I have throughout the day vary depending on the location that we are in. For lunch, I typically look for vegetarian or vegan food options. For dinner, I enjoy finding a nice Indian, Mexican or Italian restaurant.

There are a ton of amazing cafes in all of the different areas that we spend time in. I love getting a cappuccino in the middle of the day at a local cafe and relaxing before our next excursion. The majority of the time I eat a meal at this vegetarian cafe near where we have class. The food is delicious and reasonably priced! My two favorite meals on this trip so far have been at that vegetarian restaurant and this restaurant called Le Bon. At the vegetarian cafe I usually get this incredible chili, with spinach lasagne, pesto tortellini and kusco. This meal only cost 6 euros! The second best meal I’ve had was at this breakfast place near our new hostel where I got eggs benedict with rosemary ham, a homemade English muffin, a small side salad, and everything topped with pesto. This meal was so delicious.

I have done a good job at managing money for food on my trip thus far. Usually, my meals will not cost more than 10 euros. This is something I was worried about before leaving for the trip, that I would be spending too much money on food. Our new hostel has a communal kitchen so now I will be able to buy groceries and hopefully only pay for one meal out a day. Since I have traveled Europe before I am accustomed to using communal kitchens. In fact, I enjoy preparing my own meals as well as getting to know the different people in our hostel. It’s fun to cook food and socialize. One aspect of the food industry that I find to be extremely odd is the fact that we have to pay for water!
