My Favorite Places in My 5KM

Church in Cork, Ireland behind a colorful row of houses.

With Level 5 restrictions still in place in Ireland- and just recently extended for another month- we are only allowed to travel within a 5 km radius of our homes.  Luckily for my roommates and I, we are in a great area of Cork with many places to explore within our 5 km ranging from the city to the countryside and everything in between.  It has forced us to explore the city on a more microscopic level; my roommate and I joke we know every supermarket and coffee shop in all of Cork!  Having only 5 km to explore means that we have found “off the map” places (I’m exaggerating a bit- if you Google these places, you will find them in an article titled “Cool Places to Visit in Cork”).  Here are a few of my favorite places to visit:

Bell’s Field-

Bell’s Field is a grassy hill slope in the middle of a neighborhood at the top of the hill.  It overlooks the entirety of Cork City and has been labeled “the best view of Cork City”.  That is something I wholeheartedly agree with.  Not only can you see the beautiful churches and the bustling city from above, but the sun sets right in front of you as well.  Being on such a steep hill, it almost feels like there’s nothing below you- like you are on the edge of the world.  It is a brilliant place to sit and have a drink and snack with friends while watching the sunset.

Cork City Tesco-

There is another Tesco located in Wilton, but personally, the Tesco in the city is my favorite.  It’s layout just makes more sense than the other one and the roasted chicken is much better here.  However, the roasted chickens are made fresh on Tuesday, so go early in the week if you want one, as they will be gone by the time you do your weekend shopping trip.

Myo Cafe-

While I am not a coffee drinker, I do drink tea.  We try to go to a different coffee shop everytime we go out, and since there is nothing else open, we have been going to A LOT of coffee shops.  Of all the ones we have tried, Myo Cafe has been my favorite so far.  It is across the bridge from City Center, so a bit out of the way and in a low traffic zone, yet there is always a line for it.  It is a quaint, sky blue building with a wide array of teas, coffees, homemade treats and lovely baristas.  I find myself going on walks to the city center just to go to Myo cafe, order a tea, and sit on the steps of the church next to it overlooking the river and city center.
