Hello Amsterdam
Goodbye Morocco, Hello Amsterdam! We arrive in the city after a quick stop in Madrid. We board the shuttle bus which eventually drops us off at Generator Hostel- A cool, eclectic hangout hostel around a diverse neighborhood. The group was split up into groups of 2-3 and paired into rooms. I would highly recommend this hostel if taking a trip to Amsterdam. The place has a full bar, club in the basement, sick paintings covering the walls, and backs up to Oosterman park.
We were in for a wake up call when wearing a jacket became an essential. In 12 hours we had gone from over 100 degrees in Morocco to barely 60 degrees in Amsterdam. However, we waste no time and drop our bags to head out and explore the new city. Much to our surprise the city around our hostel seemed to be shutting down around midnight. Also we quickly learned about the bike lane rule as many of us were nearly tackled.
The night walk was a sneak peak of how beautiful Amsterdam is with its canals and cobblestone streets. We crisscross the city following canals all the way to the notable Amsterdam sign. After midnight is the perfect time for the selfie since the crowds have passed. We were able to catch the last metro back to the hostel. Luckily, we were each given Metro passes which had plenty of charge to explore the city over the next week.
The next morning begins the typical week in the city. We make our way over to the University of Amsterdam for a 2 hour lecture or site visit in the morning. Then it’s a quick one or two hour lunch break before it’s back to another 2 hour lecture or site visit. This schedule takes up most of the day so free time begins around 3 or 4 pm. I would say one needs more time to see Amsterdam but I’m just thankful to be here!
