NEU vs Meiji
Right after we got through customs and immigration, we were greeted with a sign that had “NEU” written in large letter with little hearts surrounding it. Haku (also called Lily) as well as Yoon greeted all of us at Narita airport that afternoon. They are just 2 students out of around 30 Meiji supporters. Meiji supporters are students from Meiji University (where we will be taking classes) who have signed up to help show Northeastern students around Japan. The Meiji supporters are proficient enough in English to answer any questions we might have. In my opinion, they are the heart of this DOC. They make my experience in Japan so much more fulfilling by showing me their favorite local food joint or their go-to clothing store. By spending time with the Meiji supporters, I believe that everyone from Northeastern are able to really understand more about the culture and the people in it.
One of the places that I think is a major part of Japanese culture are the shrines. Shinto shrines are a place of prayer where weddings could be held and where wishes could be written on wooden blocks. The most interesting thing I’ve purchased so far in Japan is a charm from one of these shrines. The charm brings good fortune to whomever owns it. I thought it was interesting because I’ve always liked charms and although there is no scientific proof charms work, I think it’s nice to have something to believe in.
