Sydney Living
My first week here in Sydney is coming to an end. This week has been mixed with different emotions, and overall it has truly been a fun week. I am living in a 6 room apartment in a student accommodation in downtown Sydney called Urbanest. Granted, the room is pretty small; but it has everything you need. You have your own bathroom and shower, which is really convenient and comfortable. So, the five other people living here with me share the kitchen and the “living room” (more like a common area) together.
I arrived here in Sydney significantly later than the majority of people here. Most people got here during the morning, and I got here during late during the evening. It was truly unfortunate because there were a couple of activities planned out for everyone here Urbanest, which took place during Saturday afternoon. So unfortunately, I missed out on a proper introduction with the majority of people here in Urbanest. However, it turned out to not be a problem, as everyone here are very welcoming. I believe everyone knows that we are all in the same boat here in Sydney. A boat that is far, far, far away from home. That is why we all have to keep together. All of my suitemates are all nice and cool people, and we all help each other out with the various problems that might occur.
Living here in Urbanest is a new experience and a bit different from my residence hall at Northeastern. At Northeastern, everything is sort of “handed” to you, with example of the availability of dining halls. However, here, there are obviously no dining halls. As a result, every day requires a little bit more planning. You have to go to the grocery store and purchase everything that you might need. This goes from food to even cutlery and frying pans. However, cooking for myself is actually a lot more fun than I thought it would be. I am definitely not the best one here, but I enjoy learning from all my mates!
I was a bit nervous to meet everyone in my classes. However, I underestimated how open and interested everyone here is. The people in my class are very keen to get to know you better, and it is really cool to meet people from all over the U.S. There are not only Northeastern students here, which I really enjoy. It is of course easier to connect with my fellow Huskies here in Sydney, but it is cool to meet new people as well! It seems like everyone wants to reach out of their comfort zone and meet new people, which is awesome.
Since everyone are still new to this marvelous city, everyone is very keen to explore it. Yesterday, I took a long walk from Urbanest to the Sydney Opera house and the Botanical Garden. It was such an amazing view down by the harbor, and the sunset by the opera was like something you would find on a postcard. Incredible scenes!
The weekend is coming up and most people here are trying to plan something out together. So, during this weekend I will try to go to the famous Bondi Beach with a couple of friends and try to explore that part of Sydney. There are also a lot of social events coming up during the next couple of weeks which is going to be fun. I just signed up for “Breakfast with the Koalas” and a surf camp. I am really excited for these activities!
