Typical Weekday
My alarm clock goes off at 7:45 each morning. Depending on how late I went to bed the night before (normally later than I should have), I’ll either get up then or lay in bed on my phone until 8. Then it’s up, getting dressed, popping some toast in the toaster or some oatmeal on the stove, and packing my backpack. I have a different set of classes each day so I have to be sure I have the right notebooks and lab manuals in my bag. I have to pack a lunch, because buying food on campus is crazy expensive, and then I’m out the door.
I try to walk to school because it’s a nice way to wake up in the morning, but sometimes if I’m running late I’ll hop on the bus that leaves from across the road. My first class is at 9am, and I always overestimate how long it’ll take me to get to class. So I sit in the lecture hall for 10 or 15 minutes, trying to not fall back asleep and convincing myself I don’t have enough time to get a coffee. I have class most days from 9am to 5pm, with some breaks, if I’m lucky, in between. At the beginning of the semester I was really good about getting out my computer during breaks and working on any assignments I have, but the past couple weeks I’ve found myself sitting and socializing more–which hopefully won’t reflect too poorly on my grades.
By the time I leave class in the afternoon, I’m beat. If I’m out of toilet paper or need groceries I’ll stop by the Aldi on my way back from class, but most days I’m so desperate to relax I power walk back and have turned the 25 minute walk into a 17 minute one. Every time I walk in the door of my apartment, one of my roommates is cooking something delicious. Our place always smells like curry or pasta or cookies, and it brightens my day no matter what. Our apartment complex has a little gym, and I try to go everyday after class to flex muscles other than my brain.
Then it’s finally time for fun (after a shower)! Because my roommates and I all get along so well, we normally hang out each night. Sometimes it’s heading out to a comedy show at the casino, or checking out the late happy hour at a bar nearby. My favorite is pub trivia. Sometimes it’s just making our own dinners and sharing chocolate and peanut butter while watching a movie (everyone in my apartment is a sucker for pb and chocolate, it’s a bit dangerous). Because, theoretically, I’ve done most of my assignments at school, I don’t normally have much homework and I can get to bed at a reasonable time.
Unless, of course, we all decide to head to any of the many weekday nights-out that happen in Sydney. That’s when I’ll lay in bed until 8 the next morning.
