Week 2: Transportation

Every morning at 9 am, we take a school bus covered in murals to the Jose Marti learning center, for lectures on Cuban history and photography.

Public transportation here is through buses and two types of taxis. The buses are subsidized and incredibly affordable, but they are also very crowded. It takes a few cents to get on one for any stop in the city. There are also coconut taxis, which are small, yellow, and shaped like a coconut. They have no windshields and drive pretty slowly, but they’re a lot of fun. The other type of taxi is just a normal car, but most of the cars here are from the 50’s. While many are rusting and breaking down, a lot of them are also kept in spectacular condition, and it’s a very cool experience taking either type. Taxis are obviously a bit more expensive, but still only go up to a few dollars to drive within Havana.
