Week 3 – Landmarks and Interesting Places

If you go on any travel site, a couple common attractions are the Merlion, Sentosa, the Gardens by the Bay, etc. In my personal opinion, touristy things are a one-and-done kind of deal and don’t really reflect what the community has to offer. The most interesting place to me was the National Library. Although I am not a bookworm, I was absolutely fascinated by the sheer size and volume of this place. It has 13 floors of books and meeting rooms, and the place was gorgeous. I spent a good amount of time messing around and doing a bit of reading homework around here.

One of the more unfortunate things I do have to recommend against is going to the beach on the south coast of Singapore. All you’ll see will be freight ships and oil ships; it really ruins the view. I would say taking a bike ride along the East Coast Park isn’t a bad idea, but bike rentals are a bit pricey and the cheaper O-bikes are not comfortable. If you want to see sea water, the coast at Changi Village is much more beautiful.

Our school brought us to an incineration plant for my energy class. We obviously couldn’t get an up-close view of the incinerator, but it was interesting to see the schematic and the whole process of extracting energy out of the tons of garbage they receive everyday. It was quite smelly, but it wasn’t worse than part of New York City to be honest.
