What Language Requirements?
There is no language requirement needed for studying abroad in Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon was a hidden gem that has quickly become a popular travel destination for Europe. Prior to arrival in Portugal I had embarked on two Dialogues to Brazil and have been taking Portuguese course at Northeastern. However, when I speak in Portuguese here, everyone recognizes my accent as Brazilian and begins speaking to me in English. Portuguese from Portugal and Brazil are quite different. The accents in Portugal are much harsher than Brazil and there are different words to mean different things. In most places, especially tourist’s traps, everyone speaks English really well.
When you first arrive to Portugal there is a 2 week intensive Portuguese language course that everyone must enroll in. After the two week course you will be a placed in a semester long course. So if you really want to learn Portuguese the opportunity is available to you. But I wouldn’t worry about it too much because you will barely ever be forced to use it unless you really want to practice- especially if you’re placed in the beginners course!
