What Public Transportation?

Getting to and from class every day is very easy. We walk as a group for 15 minutes to get to the school. There is a public bus or bikes that we can rent to get to the university, however it is much easier to just walk instead of paying money to get there 5 minutes faster. We are staying in a hostel as close as we can get to the school, so it is not necessary to use another form of transportation.

The public transportation here is not as prevalent as in other countries. When I went on the Netherlands dialogue last year, we only used public transportation to get around. Here is very different though. The people in Iceland and Reykjavik especially use cars much more. There are public buses that travel around the city and slightly outside too. One disadvantage to this is that it takes a while to get somewhere if you want to get outside the city and go to a specific town. The tickets also cost more money than it does in the U.S. When looking up buying tickets online, there was only one option to buy a pass for 20 rides and the price per ticket is about $4. The only other form of public transportation is bikes. There are some bike lanes on some roads and many people bike around the island; however, it is just as easy to walk, even if you are afraid of biking in the middle of the car lane. Overall, there is public transportation, but it is easier and cheaper to just walk everywhere in Reykjavik. For traveling around the country, a car is necessary to travel to places further outside the city.
