Supertrees in Singapore
The last time I was on a field trip was in probably middle school and field trips make up some of my fondest memories growing up. However, I do wish that those field trips resonated with me more because I can only remember bits and pieces. The best part of being an adult is that every new experience becomes etched in my memory. I recently went to the National Gallery of Singapore and the Marina Barrage and both places spoke to me. Both places painted a picture of Singapore to me, past and present, and I was able to learn about the country through the lens of these two places.
The National Gallery is just a 10 minute walk from the SMU campus, so I have no excuse to not pay the place a visit. This museum is definitely on my list of top 5 museums because it is truly one of a kind. The building is the former Supreme Court and City Hall and much of its original architecture remains intact. I spent about 5 hours one day perusing the Southeast Asian exhibit and I was impressed by how well curated and informative it was. I also wrote an essay for my “Exploring Asian Identities” course and I was able to examine the gallery by applying the academic literature we discussed in class.
I also thoroughly enjoyed going to the Marina Barrage, which is Singapore’s 15th reservoir. This reservoir is particularly interesting because there is an informational gallery about the Marina Barrage’s history, current environmental initiatives, etc. One could tell that every detail of this reservoir was taken into consideration. Now I have so many fun facts about Singapore’s water resources and green initiatives!
Two months into living into Singapore, I really feel that I have fallen in love with this country. I have found my favorite spot in all of Singapore – sitting under the Supertrees in Gardens by the Bay at night. The lights and the view are just spectacular!
