The Technologically Advanced City
One of the best things about Singapore is how technologically advanced the city is. Wifi is available almost everywhere when one is out and about. Also, if one needs to use a computer or to print documents, SMU’s library is equipped to provide that and more.
In addition to the mandatory phone Northeastern provided me for my semester abroad, I also brought along my personal cellphone. I use my personal cellphone much less than my NEU phone and this is the case because I keep in touch with family and friends via apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, WeChat) more than calling/texting.
I would recommend getting a Singaporean SIM card in the event one needs to make a phone call or one is in an emergency situation. The main mobile companies here are Singtel, Starhub, and M1. The SIM cards can be purchased from authorized vendors (street vendors, 7 Eleven) or from the companies themselves.
I cannot speak for Starhub or M1’s offerings, but Singtel has SIM cards for time periods as short as 7 days. However, most exchange students select the monthly plan and essentially, the card’s value determines the allotted number of calls and texts. So if there is 10 SGD on the card, one can make up to 10SGD’s worth of calls and texts and once the value runs out, one must top up the card online. Data is also a separate charge and since it is more useful, I would recommend not skipping out on data.
